Avondale town square, library and community hub
A new, multi-purpose library and community hub is coming to the Avondale town centre as part of the urban regeneration of Avondale.
About the new library and community hub
The Avondale library and community hub will be one of the first integrated library and community centres in Auckland.
The new facility will:
- be flexible enough to hold a range of activities and events.
- be a place to share, connect and meet, hang out and play in the heart of Avondale.
- ‘open up’ to connect to the outdoor spaces.
About the facility's outdoor spaces
The outdoor spaces included in this project surround the new building.
On the map you will notice that a larger part of Avondale Central Reserve is shown in grey, this indicates a future reference design for this space and is not part of this project.
We will retain the existing trees on the site and add new plants which acknowledge the long history of the whenua (land).
Background to the project
The existing Avondale Community Centre is in poor condition and parts of the building are closed. The library building is also coming to the end of its life. The current town square needs to be flexible to grow for bigger events, be a welcoming meeting point for locals, and to provide vibrancy to the main street. These opportunities provide a chance to build a new library and community hub in the heart of the town centre, to meet the needs of a growing and changing community.
What we've done so far
We’ve engaged with mana whenua, stakeholders and the Avondale community over a number of years, and from these conversations we’ve created a draft design for the new Avondale library and community hub.
Now, we want your feedback on this design so we can ensure that it provides for Avondale’s diverse and growing community.
To get started
The draft designs for the new Avondale library and community hub are broken into four levels: Street level, Reserve level, Mezzanine level, and Sky level. You can navigate through these on the left of the screen.
To leave your feedback, drag a pin icon from the top of the screen to anywhere on the map. Add your comment and email address in the pop-up window. Need more info, check out these design plans.
